What a Custom TV Unit Costs in South Africa (2026 Prices)

5 October 2026 · 7 min read

A TV unit looks simple until you price one. The flat pack option from the chain store is cheap and looks it, the imported wall unit is beautiful and costs more than a small car, and somewhere in between there is a custom build that fits your wall exactly.

This guide covers what a custom TV unit or media wall costs in South Africa in 2026, why the retail prices are so high, and how a built-in unit is priced. We build custom joinery in Komani (Queenstown), so we will use our own rates as the reference point.

The short answer: R4,500 to R8,000 per metre installed

Custom cabinetry in South Africa is priced by the linear metre, the same way kitchens and built-in cupboards are. At Kannjane a custom TV unit or media wall runs R4,500 to R8,000 per metre, built, finished and installed.

A typical TV wall is two to four metres wide. Two metres at the bottom of the range is R9,000, and four metres at the top is R32,000. That feels like a wide spread, so here is what moves you along it.

Why retail wall units cost so much

The retail end of this market is priced for convenience and imported finishes. A national wall unit specialist quotes entry level wall mounted TV units at R39,500 to R55,000, mid range at R55,000 to R85,000, and premium above that, with a separate R450 fee just to come and measure.

That is not a criticism of the product. Those are panel built units with imported hardware, and the price includes their overheads, their showroom and their delivery. It is simply worth knowing that a local joinery team building the same wall in your own dimensions does not have to cost that.

What changes the price

Lighting is the detail that makes the biggest visual difference and the one most people forget to budget for. An LED strip under a floating shelf, or a light behind the unit to lift it off the wall, costs a few hundred rand in parts and changes how the finished job looks.

Per metre pricing hides a lot, so ask what is included. These are the things that move the number:

  • Length. The main driver. Everything else is priced on top of the run
  • Finish. Standard melamine board is the workhorse. Wood veneer, sprayed finishes and solid timber cost more
  • Doors and drawers. Open shelving is cheapest. Soft close doors and full extension drawers add cost but add daily value
  • Floating or floor standing. A floating unit needs proper wall fixing and often a bracket system, which is more work than a floor unit
  • Details. Cable management, a backing panel, a plinth and lighting all add line items

Custom versus flat pack versus retail

The three options are not really competing for the same buyer. Flat pack is the cheapest up front and the shortest lived, because the panels and fittings are the thinnest available. Retail wall units sit at the top of the price range and come in fixed sizes you then have to design your room around. Custom sits in the middle.

What you buy with custom is fit. The unit is made to your wall, to your TV size, and to the height you actually want, with the storage you actually need. If you are having cupboards built at the same time, a TV unit made from the same board and finish in the same workshop costs less than a separate job, and the room looks like one piece of work rather than three.

Sizing it to your wall and TV

Two numbers decide the design. The first is the wall width you have to work with. The second is the TV itself, because the unit has to be proportioned to the screen, not the other way around.

A common mistake is building a unit that is too shallow for the equipment, or too low for the screen height once you are sitting down. Measure the room, not just the wall. If you send us a photo of the wall with the width and the TV size, we can size it and quote it from that. Our built-in cupboard guide explains the same per metre logic if you want to price the rest of the room at the same time.

Think about what the unit has to carry before you settle on a design. A TV, a soundbar, a decoder, a router and a games console all need space, ventilation and a plug point. If equipment sits behind a closed door, the back panel needs ventilation or the hardware cooks.

TV units and media walls in Komani, Queenstown and the Eastern Cape

Custom TV units are one of the jobs we enjoy most, because there is no showroom equivalent. Nobody else in Komani is building a media wall to your exact wall, and that is the whole point of going custom.

We build floating media units, wall units with drawer storage, TV stands with shelving and full media walls, all finished to match the rest of your cabinetry. If it is made of wood, we can build it. Send a photo of the wall and the measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a per metre price and a sketch.

Quick answers to the questions we get asked most. If yours isn't here, send it through on WhatsApp and we'll give you a straight answer.

How much does a custom TV unit cost in South Africa?

At Kannjane a custom TV unit or media wall runs R4,500 to R8,000 per metre, built, finished and installed. A typical two to four metre wall works out at R9,000 to R32,000.

Why are retail wall units so expensive?

A national wall unit specialist quotes entry level wall mounted units at R39,500 to R55,000, with a separate R450 measurement fee. That price covers imported finishes, showroom overheads and delivery, none of which a local custom build carries.

Is a custom TV unit worth it over flat pack?

If the unit has to fit a specific wall and hold real equipment, yes. Flat pack is cheapest up front but uses the thinnest panels and fittings, and it only comes in fixed sizes.

Can you build a floating media wall?

Yes. Floating units, wall units with drawers, TV stands with shelving and full media walls are all standard builds. Floating units need proper wall fixing, which we price in.

How long does a custom TV unit take?

Usually one to two weeks from final measurement to installation, depending on the finish and how busy the workshop is. Installation itself is normally a day.

Can you match my existing cupboards?

Yes. If your kitchen or built-in cupboards are made from a current board and finish, we can match the TV unit to them so the room reads as one job.

Do you build TV units in Komani, Queenstown and Ezibeleni?

Yes. We build custom joinery across Komani (Queenstown), Ezibeleni and the surrounding Eastern Cape area. Send a photo of the wall and the measurements to 083 525 9808 for a free quote.
