Kitchen Cupboard Repair Costs in SA: Repair or Replace in 2026?
5 October 2026 · 8 min read
Cupboards take a beating. Doors get yanked, hinges work loose, drawers jam, and one leaking pipe under the sink can quietly ruin a whole carcass. The good news is that most of what goes wrong is fixable for a fraction of what new cupboards cost.
This guide covers what kitchen cupboard repairs cost in South Africa in 2026, what the common failures are, and how to tell when a repair stops making sense and replacement is the better spend. We repair and build cupboards in Komani (Queenstown), so the figures here are real Eastern Cape numbers.
The short answer: R250 to R6,000
National repair specialists quote an average of R2,000 to R6,000 per cabinet for a kitchen cabinet repair. That is the metro price, driven by overheads and travel. A local team working on the same failure comes in lower, and the range below is what we work to in 2026.
Repair costs track the size of the problem, not the size of the kitchen:
- Minor: a hinge, a drawer runner, a re-glue. R250 to R600
- Moderate: a structural fix, a re-veneered door, a replacement face. R600 to R1,500
- Major: rebuilding parts of a cabinet or re-finishing a unit. R1,500 to R4,000
- Full restore of a unit: R2,500 to R6,000
The five things that actually break
Almost every cupboard repair call is one of five problems. Knowing which one you have makes the quote far easier to sanity check.
Diagnosing it is not hard. Open the door and look at where the hinge meets the board. If the screw holes are chewed out, that is a hinge problem, and it is the cheapest fix on this list. If the board itself is soft or swollen, you are looking at a rebuild. Knowing which one you have before you call stops you paying for work you do not need.
- Hinges. The most common failure by far. Cabinet hinges pull out of chipboard when the screws strip the board, and the fix is a larger screw, a repair plate, or moving the hinge to fresh board
- Drawer runners. Roller runners wear out and drawer bottoms sag. A new pair of runners is cheap, and the labour to fit them is the cost
- Doors and faces. Warped, swollen or chipped doors. If the carcass is sound, replacing doors only is far cheaper than a new kitchen
- Water damaged carcasses. The one that decides the job. Chipboard swells and crumbles once it has been wet, and swollen board cannot be repaired, only replaced
- Sagging shelves and rails. Usually a fixing problem rather than a material problem, and one of the cheapest fixes on the list
The repair versus replace calculation
The number that matters is the cost of the whole cupboard run. New built-in cupboards run R4,500 to R8,000 per metre installed, and custom kitchen cabinetry runs R9,000 to R15,000 per metre. So a three metre run of cupboards is somewhere between R13,500 and R45,000 to replace.
Against that, a round of hinge and runner repairs on the same run might cost a few thousand rand. If the carcasses and doors are sound, repair is almost always the better spend. Our built-in cupboard cost guide breaks the per metre pricing down properly if you are weighing up replacement.
Water damage is the one that decides it
Chipboard and MDF swell when they get wet, and they do not go back. Once a carcass has absorbed water it loses its strength, the fixings will not hold, and no amount of glue brings it back. This is the single most common reason a repair turns into a replacement.
So check for water before you accept a repair quote. Look under the sink and around the dishwasher. Press the board. If it feels soft, spongy or swollen at the edges, that section has to be rebuilt, and the quote should say so. If a repairer is willing to patch swollen board and tell you it will be fine, get a second opinion.
There is a middle path worth knowing about. If the water damage is confined to the base of one cabinet, the carcass can often be rebuilt section by section, keeping the doors, the countertop and the rest of the run. That is cheaper than a new kitchen and more honest than a patch that will fail.
What a repair visit looks like
Most repair jobs are a half day to a day. Skilled day labour runs R1,100 to R1,600 at Kannjane, and a repair that takes half a day sits at the bottom of that range, with materials on top. A full day rebuilding a complex cabinet lands at the top.
Send us a photo before we come out. Half the jobs we quote can be diagnosed from a picture of the hinge, the runner or the damaged board, which means we arrive with the right parts and finish in one visit. That saves you a second callout and a second day of labour.

Repair before you replace is the rule we work to. A cupboard carcass is usually sound even when the doors and runners are finished, and replacing the moving parts is a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions we get asked most. If yours isn't here, send it through on WhatsApp and we'll give you a straight answer.
How much does it cost to repair kitchen cupboards in South Africa?
It depends on the failure. Minor repairs such as a hinge or runner run R250 to R600, moderate structural fixes R600 to R1,500, and rebuilding parts of a cabinet R1,500 to R4,000. National repair specialists average R2,000 to R6,000 per cabinet.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace kitchen cupboards?
Repair is almost always cheaper if the carcasses and doors are sound. New cupboards run R4,500 to R8,000 per metre installed, so a three metre run costs R13,500 or more to replace.
Can swollen or water damaged cupboards be repaired?
No. Swollen chipboard loses its strength and will not hold fixings, so that section has to be rebuilt. Localised water damage is a partial rebuild rather than a whole kitchen.
Can you replace just the cupboard doors?
Yes, and it is one of the best value jobs in a kitchen. If the carcasses are solid, new doors and handles transform the look for far less than a full replacement.
How long does a cupboard repair take?
Most repairs are a half day to a day. Send a photo first and we can usually arrive with the right parts and finish in one visit.
Do you fix drawer runners and hinges?
Yes, they are the two most common repairs we do. Stripped hinge screws, worn runners and sagging drawers are all standard fixes.
